The Gay Gold Coast is Famous for Fun...the word "gay" being synonymous with "fun." Gay and lesbian visitors and locals find out about gay welcoming venues, tours, attractions and clubs on the Gay Gold Coast Facebook, You Tube and Twitter pages.
This week, there's news from Dreamworld, Australia's favorite theme park...home of Pi, a newborn Sumatran tiger.

Just in time for the Summer holiday season, Dreamworld is launching several new Australian themed shows, a new outdoor sheep sheering arena and a brand new cinema complex.

Start your day at the all new Dreamworld Cinemas located near the Main Street Fountain where you can catch the ‘Australia, The Great Southern Land’ film each day at 10am.

The 30 minute film focuses on the four themed territories that Dreamworld showcases: The wetlands of Kakadu, the Rainforests of the Daintree, the Outback, and Koala country.

To celebrate all that is summer and the unique Australian culture, the nation’s favourite theme park is currently putting the final touches on the new Dreamworld Woolshed located between Billabong Restaurant and the Australian Wildlife Experience.

A 400 seat undercover arena, the Woolshed will be home to a variety of farm yard animals, commonly found on Australian farms, and the brand new Australian Sheep Shearing show. Featuring a host of true blue Aussie blokes, these genuine shearers will keep the crowds laughing while they demonstrate life on an Australian farm.

The Australian Sheep Shearing Show will open on 26 December with three shows a day at 10am, 11am and 2pm.

Continuing in celebration of Australia’s traditional culture Dreamworld is launching a captivating Aboriginal show, Dreamworld Dreamtime, this summer, featuring stories, songs and dance spoken and performed by members of the regions Koombamerri tribe.

Long long ago when the Dreamtime first began, the Koombamerri people roamed the area of the Gold Coast and gathered around the Coomera River, creating stories, songs and dances that echoed every occasion: stories about hunting, songs about animals, and dances that celebrate the spirituality of the land and its legends.

Guests will watch as the Koombamerri Dreamtime Dancers showcase the movements of their totem the eagle that soars above the earth signalling the start of the fishing season, listen to the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo against the quick beat of the clapsticks, and be mesmerised by a culture that demonstrates a traditional Aboriginal method of firelighting by rubbing two carefully chosen sticks together.

Catch Dreamworld Dreamtime from 20 December – 28 February* at 10.40am and 11.40am each day.

These new shows add to an entertainment packed day at Dreamworld where adrenaline seekers can test out their tonsils on the Big 6 Thrill Rides and families can enjoy all the fun and giggles in Nickelodeon Central and Wiggles World. If you want water spills then head next door to WhiteWater World.

All That's New and Exciting on the Lively Gold Coast

The ever evolving Gold Coast region moves into top gear for the summer season with many new and exciting initiatives that will enhance the destination's reputation as "Famous For Fun."

To narrow the list, we have filtered through the offerings and selected those of interest to lesbian and gay travellers and their families and friends. Still a big list, there are classic and new twist experiences from the gay-welcoming accommodation, restaurants, clubs, shopping centres and tour operators across the region.
Just a sampling of things to read in forthcoming postings on Gay Gold Coast blog...

Locals and visitors alike should not overlook the Q Deck - not that anyone could miss Queensland's tallest building with 78 levels.
Although the Q Deck is not a new attraction, management by Dreamworld is, and the beachside observation deck is off to a good start with evening events like the recent Tales and Ales With Brew Master Dr Chuck Hahn” of James Squire craft beers fame.
Experiencing 360 degree views at sunset with a Sundown lager in one hand and a matching chef's creation of Mt. Tamborine goat cheese on a crisp pastry tartlet in the other, was exhilarating end educational at the same time.
If you thought the (aptly named) Q Deck and Q Bar (highest altitude bar on the Gold Coast) wasn't a place to go on Friday or Saturday night before or after the clubs, think again.

Gold Coast, Famous for fun.

The Gold Coast is known as Australia’s favourite holiday destination. The new brand, “Famous for Fun”, covers the personality, variety, and energy of the Gold Coast holiday experience.

The problem many tourists have is deciding what to do, where to eat, where to stay and how much fun can be crammed in between the ocean and the hinterland!   By air, land and sea, even on a scooter!

For gay tourists – singles, couples and families – there are plenty of options and operators who are extending a gay welcome. Read more about the generic fun on Visit Gold Coast and about gay fun in the Gay & Lesbian Destination Guide.

The Broadbeach scene includes one of the best surfing spots on Gold Coast

Don't rule out the Gold Coast because you have a mental image of bright lights, theme parks and tacky souvenir shops. You'll find a whole different scene at the rather cosmopolitan Broadbeach.  And it just happens to be Brad's favorite spot, when we asked a local about where to ride the waves...
Local surf champion and coach Brad Holmes says “I like Broadbeach because it is often forgotten, tucked out of the way, yet in the centre of the Gold Coast. It’s a beautiful spot to learn to surf, with perfect conditions for beginner surfers.

Broadbeach boasts an expansive glistening white sandy beach, plus very few high rise buildings, the Queensland Art Gallery adjacent the Broadbeach SLSC, Sunday Markets on the second Sunday of the month, and two great coffee shops within easy walking distance.
These are the main reasons why I conduct my surfing lessons at Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club,” he says.
Contact Brad Holmes Surf Coaching, a Gay Comfort certified operator, for booking a surf lesson or stand up paddling session at Budds Beach in Surfers.

Dreamworld Relaunches the Tower of Terror

One of Australia’s most iconic scream machines, Dreamworld’s Tower of Terror, re-launched last week with a terrifying twist.

If you thought the traditional Tower of Terror filled you with fear then get ready for the flip side of the ride and the mother of all modifications. On the all new
Tower of Terror II riders rocket backwards at 160km/h, hurtle 100m skywards then hang for seconds in stomach-churning weightlessness before plunging face-first back to earth.

Unlike the original, adrenalin junkies will be harnessed into the deepest depths of the Tower’s lair, facing nothing but a dark void. An eerie silence lasts for just milliseconds before the car blasts backwards rocketing guests out of a 206m tunnel at rapid speed.

If this sounds like a world of fun to you, get it a go.

Did you know? Gold Coast Tourism is committed to increasing gay tourism to the region and has just launched the The Gay and Lesbian Destination Guide to Australia's Gold Coast.  (Dreamworld is a supporter.) Gold Coast has no shortage of entertainment and experiences catering to visitors and locals alike

On a given weekend, there are many events on offer - like Gold Coast Show Day at Parklands this Friday, a work holiday in Queensland, to the City Cup Race Day on Saturday at the Turf Club.  Both events strongly encouragement "family trips," so if you happen to be looking for things to do with your kids this weekend, you're in luck....kids events to live racing for the big kids.  Put a gold star on these two!
Also this weekend but continuing through 5 September, is Tastes of Gold Coast.  Participating restaurants line the Glitter Strip and beyond.  Each district has it's own theme, from Eurofest in Surfers to the best fish and chips on the beach at Coolongatta.

Something novel is The Cocktail Trail at participating hotels throughout the region.
Tamborine Mountain Distillery has joined forces with some of the Gold Coast’s best mixologists to create stunning cocktails especially for the festival. Follow the trail and discover these liquid gold treats!

Surfing Options: Be Inspired by the Locals

The Gold Coast has its share of  legends - both men and women who've walked on water (atop boards).

Take Sharon, who previously held Australian Fun Board and Queensland Slalom titles.  "I once was a serious and passionate wind surfer, but now I'm just a recreational speed racer. I'd like to see more women learn to wind surf."

Take Brad, a former champ who has been a surf coach since 1992.  His company, Brad Holmes Surf Coaching, incorporates something different.  "Brad led me through some basic Tai Chi warm up exercises before teaching me the art of Stand Up Paddle Boarding,"  says surfing newbie Dee.
"I don't think I'll be kite surfing anytime soon.  For now I'm content to be more relaxed while clicking my way up river."

Find Yourself in O'Reilly's Lost World Spa on the Mountaintop

This Gay Gold Coast blog features inspiring things to see and do in Australia's dream destination...where vibrant lesbian and gay travel experiences are paramount!  Spending a day - or two or three - at the Lost World Spa with this view is one of them!

Nature Conscious Retreat (24th - 26th September)
Take time for yourself to de-stress, detox and commune with nature in the luxury and comfort of O'Reilly's. Meditate while walking, sitting on the roots of millenarian trees or next to waterfalls to clear your mind, uplift your spirit, align to the life-force of trees and water, and ground yourself.

Signature Treatment

Vinotherapy treatments are unique, signature treatments for the Lost World Spa. ( No, they don't use excess wine from O'Reillys Winery!)
Vinotherapy involves using grape seed extracts which happen to contain some of nature's most powerful antioxidents. The grape products are rich in collagen and firm the skin and slow down the aging process. The infusion of the extracts of grape will introduce healing properties and rejuvenate.
Products such as Red Grape extract, micronised vines, wine leaves, grape skins, yeasts, grape seed oil, red wine or muscatel wine are used to stimulate the production of collagen, combat free radicals and prevent the premature aging of the skin, as well as improving blood circulation, stimulating the immune system and combating fatigue.

Shopping Competition: Personal Best Day around the Gold Coast

Can one successfully shop every major mall from Southport to Surfers to Robina in a day?  Yes, say the super shoppers who accomplished Marina Mirage, Cavill Centro, HarbourTown, Robina Town Centre and Pacific Fair in under 8 hours.  Spiking the Gold Coast economy while ticking off one item of their getaway experience.

He said:
"As a local gay man, I like the fine dining and entertainment complex at Robina, not to mention the great stores.  Someday, I'm going to do the makeover scene and hire a Robina Stylist to walk me through their menu of services at this grand complex."

She said:
"As a solo lesbian tourist, I was pleased to learn that all of the Gold Coast Tourism member malls offer tourism packages - discounts for groups as well as individuals to help ease the wallet strain.  At HarbourTown...the Outlet Shopping Adventure,  there's a lounge with multilingual, friendly staff to ease the entry to marathon shopping.  I used it as exit point to rest my weary feet and take a load off from carrying my package of new jeans."

For a quick look at what each of the others has to offer locals and visitors, see Marina Mirage (upmarket), Pacific Fair (largest in QLD), and Cavill Centro (on pedestrian mall in Surfers).
