Exploring the Very Gay Gold Coast

On any given day (average 300 days of sunshine a year)…the Gold Coast is gay. A happy place to play, shop, dine, relax, dance, surf, swim and fly around.

Just ask David, who recently took his out-of-town guests for a Tiger Moth Joy Ride over Dreamworld, the Q1 Tower, and Surfers Paradise

"The Gold Coast is not over run with gay spots, but through my eyes and those of my lesbian and gay visitors, the region is a hot destination.  Welcome to my gay world."

Dave's Tasty Tips
  1. Songbirds Rainforest Retreat, Mt Tamborine  Songbirds boasts a unique health spa, award winning restaurant and luxury accommodation.
  2. Vanitas - Palazzo Versace, Main Beach.  They even publish their own cookbook of award-winning recipes.
  3. Tropical Fruit World (farm) and Ferry Road Markets (in Southport).  Shop and eat, exotics to gourmet goodies.

Gay Gold Coast Travellers Find Inspirations

Queensland's Very Gold Coast is very exciting, very relaxing, very entertaining and a very special place.  You probably already know that.  So this blog is not about the known Gold Coast, but about lesser known secrets and things not to miss if you're visiting for the first time or repeating a Gold Coast holiday with a gay eye.

On this blog, we want to write - and read comments and other postings from locals - about the very active, very adventurous, very peaceful, very natural, very eventful and very inspirational places of interest to lesbians, gays and their families and friends.

In 2010, the Gold Coast is reinventing itself as a vibrant destination for us. Not only are Gold Coast tourism operators joining the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) and training their staff with the Gay Comfort program, but they are "sprucing up" the gay-friendly flag decals in their shops, cafes and theme park gates.

Coming soon, lists of five.

  • 5 Very Exciting
  • 5 Very Tasty
  • 5 Very Indulgent
  • 5 Very Natural

Custom Motor Bikes and Best Tattoos Lure Gold Coast Visitors

Are you ready to get inked?  Even if you're just curious, this appears to be the event of the decade for tattoo lovers. It will showcase 160 artists from around the world.

Australia's first Surf n' Ink Tattoo Convention will be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre from 15-17 January.  Start your new year of getaways to this event for airbrush body painting, body piercing, best tattoo competitions, a fashion parade, circus acts, DJs and custom motorbike show.

I'll probably chicken out on a belly button design (ouch!), but I'm keen to see the Pinup Parade and custom airbrushed motorbikes!  Forget the ankle tat with rainbow warrior design, where's my vintage leather jacket and purple boots?

-Motorcycle Mama will be there on her Vespa.

Let's have a beach party at Rainbow Bay

Beautiful Rainbow Bay... the Gold Coast's best kept secret.

Fast Facts
  • A super sand bank formed in Rainbow Bay and once the swells starts hitting, local surfers can surf one of the world's longest, and most consistent point breaks.
  • Abundant snapper and bream have lured beach anglers over the years, with the cove also offering the perfect chance to try your hand at kayaking or windsurfing.
  • The Point Danger viewing platform allows you to take in the magnificent views along the coast, accessible via the coastal boardwalk.
  • Captain Cook named Point Danger and Mount Warning as he sailed up the coast in 1770. The Tweed River was developed as a port from the 1830s to ship cedar. The Captain Cook lighthouse is worth a view.
  • The Southern Points Promenade forms part of the Gold Coast Oceanway network, 36km of walkways, bikeways and viewing platforms.
  • Rainbow Bay is located in between Coolangatta and Tweed Heads.
