Back to nature call

Sun, surf and sand have made the Gold Coast Australia's premier tourism destination - but people look likely to want something more and indigenous ventures could be a way to keep visitors coming, according to industry experts.

Tourism Futures conference convenor Tony Charters said he expected indigenous tourism to be a growth area from northern NSW to the Sunshine Coast in coming years. "Tourists come here for lifestyle, climate and unique cultural heritage experiences," said Mr Charters.

"I would expect more indigenous tourism concepts in the future - I think there is significant opportunities for it." says Martin Winter, Gold Coast Tourism CEO. "Both local and European visitors are looking for experiences as well as sights." Mr Winter said he expected to see a rise in demand for `holistic' experiences with nature-based tourism ventures.

AUSTRALIA’S GOLD COAST A HEALTHY HOLIDAY DESTINATION

FACT: Studies show that men and women of all ages are increasingly becoming overweight or obese.

Over the last decade we have continued to gain weight and if the current trend continues, it’s thought more and more people will skyrocket well above a healthy weight range.

Unfortunately for many of us the day to day pressures of work and family life means our own well being is usually the one thing we tend to neglect.

But rather than be resigned to a future as one of these sad statistics, small steps taken now can provide
the vital impetus towards a longer, more fulfilling life.

In fact it has even been suggested the very core of many associated health problems may stem from a
lack of suitable facilities to enable a productive, self fulfilling way of life.

In the hustle and bustle of today’s society, designated ‘Me Time’ is usually only afforded during weekends
or on holidays. For this reason it is suggested that such breaks be underpinned by healthy habits, perhaps
at a location that encourages and actively promotes an ideal lifestyle.

A well deserved getaway to kickstart the ‘New You’ campaign may be just the ticket and of all the healthy
holiday destinations, the very affordable and very active Gold Coast stands out as a genuine favourite.

According to Gold Coast Tourism, “We are the fun capital! We have perfect weather nearly all year
round, have direct access to beautiful beaches and hinterland locations and with so many natural and
man-made attractions there is an extraordinary amount of things to see and do during a Gold Coast
getaway.”

Sun soaked Gold Coast beaches act as a human magnet with the sounds of rolling waves, laughing
children and seaside antics assisting to create an ambience of poetic proportion.

This setting is complemented by spectacular hinterland views that are duly appreciated by a daily parade
of people young and old, who choose such natural settings to walk, run, swim or cycle their way towards
greater internal and external healing.

Walkways, nature trails, health retreats, sporting contests and the general beachside culture of the Gold
Coast are all major contributors to an over riding desire of people to look and feel their best.

Such an attitude continues to champion the destination as one of the healthiest in Australia. This city is the
major provider of fun in the sun for up to 10 million visitors each year who are latently encouraged to get
caught up in a get fit, look good, feel great attitude.

Throughout the length and breadth of the Gold Coast cycling and pedestrian pathways, open spaces,
sports and general community recreation spaces and facilities are in abundance.

If the Gold Coast is doing its part to encourage and enthuse all who visit its shores each year, then that
has to be a good thing for the international collective state of health.

Taking advantage of the magnificent coastline and mountainous rainforest landscapes that stretch as far
as the eye can see, opportunities abound to add extensive variety and benefit to daily exercise routines.

Understandably this unique, coastal hinterland setting continues to be favourably earmarked by health
retreats and day spas, plus yoga and pilates classes that take place throughout the 2000-plus
recreational parks across the region.
